Meet Adam Ragsdale

Adam Michael Ragsdale
12/20/1990 - 8/25/2015

Adam loved most sports, but his true love was soccer. Adam played CYC soccer beginning in first grade with his dad (Ralph) as the coach. Before his first game, Ralph told Adam he would give him $5 for every goal he scored in that game. Adam came home from that first game so angry. When asked what happened, he replied that his dad took him out of the game after he scored six goals! Coach wanted to give the other players a chance to score. Adam said that wasn’t really the reason; he thought his dad didn’t want to pay him more than $30. Needless to say, Adam was wildly competitive and could do math at an early age.

After Adam returned home from college, Nacho asked him if he was interested in coaching a boys’ soccer team for REAL St. Louis. Adam was eager to share his love for the game with the U-10 boys. He spent many hours developing strategies to improve his team. Adam was committed to his kids and loved developing and coaching each player. He loved a win but no matter the outcome, he wanted the boys to love this game he was so very passionate about.

The summer Adam passed away he told his mom (Tora) about something that occurred on the sidelines during a practice. He had to discipline a player for spraying his water bottle while holding it in an inappropriate place. Adam admitted it took everything in him not to laugh. He thought the player was just “being a boy”. This story exemplified Adam’s constant dilemma of whether he was his players’ friend or mentor.

Adam was hospitalized for two weeks prior to his passing. During his hospital stay his brother, Nick, and sister in law, Kim, gave him the news that they were expecting their first child. Adam told them they would name the child after him. We don’t know if he had spiritual insight, but Little Adam was born almost eight months after that day. Little Adam, his brothers, and his cousins are often reminded of stories about Big Adam. Little Adam is excited (and a little nervous) to be helping with the initial kickoff and pulling the scholarship recipient’s name. Adam’s family is indeed humbled and proud of The Adam Ragsdale Memorial Tournament and wish them much success.
